The coaching conversation

How Christian life coaching works

Meet with a Christian life coach online, wherever you live in the United States. Work one-on-one with a member of our national team of 20 coaches on a change you want to make, with Christian faith guiding the conversation.

What does a Christian life coach do?

A Christian life coach works with you on goals and everyday decisions, with Christian faith guiding the conversation. At The Practiced Word, your coach listens to what matters to you now and helps you examine the concern you bring.

You can bring a specific goal or something you are still trying to understand. Coaching can address your own life or concerns involving your children.

A place to begin

What you can bring to coaching

Following through

You make a plan, but it gets lost in a busy day. Work on the routines and conditions that could make following through more realistic. Read about turning an intention into a specific plan.

Conversations you wish had gone differently

You interrupt, react quickly, or leave something important unsaid. Examine a particular exchange and consider what you could practice next time. Explore James 1:19 in a difficult conversation.

Decisions and changing responsibilities

A new role or a difficult choice has disrupted your usual routines. Talk through what matters to you and the actions available to you. Consider how your values inform a difficult decision.

Making room for your priorities

Prayer, rest, or time with people you care about keeps getting pushed aside. Look at how your days are arranged and where a workable change could begin. Read about building a Christian habit with a stable rhythm.

Private concerns are welcome here

Some concerns are harder to say out loud.

You do not need to make a concern sound less uncomfortable before asking whether coaching is a fit.

For adults, coaching may include practical goals involving pornography use, masturbation or another sexual habit you want to change, drinking or gambling patterns, phone or social-media use, gaming or spending habits, recurring jealousy or anger, relationships, boundaries, routines, and follow-through. These are examples of concerns someone may bring to an individual coaching conversation, not diagnoses or separate treatment programs.

A struggle you want to change does not make the concern unwelcome here. Your coach can help you describe what is happening, clarify the goal, examine the circumstances around the behavior, and consider a practical next step within the scope of coaching.

Coaching is not therapy or addiction treatment. The Practiced Word does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, substance use disorders, gambling disorder, or other clinical conditions. When a concern requires clinical treatment, a licensed professional or treatment provider may be a better fit. Coaching may sometimes complement other professional support.

Professional qualifications

The qualifications behind your coaching

Every coach holds at least a master’s degree in behavior science. Board Certified Behavior Analysts are the norm on our team. Coaches with PhDs provide leadership, and some coaches teach as adjunct professors at universities across the country.

Your coach uses that expertise to understand the concern you bring. What was happening when patience became difficult? How did you respond? What followed?

Those details help your coach respond to your circumstances. Christian faith guides the direction of the conversation. Behavior science helps you understand what makes a different response practical in your everyday life.

About our coaching firm

During your session

You begin with what matters to you today. Your coach listens and checks their understanding. The conversation follows your current concerns, without a preset lesson or script.

Together, you look at a situation you want help changing. You can discuss what happened around it and what made another response difficult.

When you would like guidance, your coach helps you consider an action that fits your circumstances. You have a say in what you work on and what you are prepared to try.

Between sessions

If you agree on something you want to try, you can put it into practice in your everyday life. Worksheets and formal data-collection homework are not required.

At a later session, you and your coach can look at what happened. What helped? Where did the plan become difficult? That information helps you decide what to keep or adjust.

New concerns can take priority. Your next conversation begins with what matters to you then.

A closer look

Answering before you have listened

Putting James 1:19 into practice.

The concern

“I react before I listen.”

Listening before offering guidance

Your coach asks about a recent conversation and checks that they understand your concern. What had been said? What were you trying to communicate? How did the other person respond?

A response that fits your life

If you want guidance, you and your coach consider what could help in that situation. Pausing to check your understanding might be useful; your coach does not prescribe that response before hearing you.

You decide whether the suggestion is useful and manageable. If you try it, a later conversation can explore what happened and whether anything needs to change.

Is Christian life coaching the same as counseling?

The Practiced Word provides Christian life coaching informed by Scripture and behavior science. Our coaches hold graduate degrees; some also hold doctoral degrees or BCBA certification. Qualifications vary by coach, and credentials describe each person’s professional background. Coaching does not replace counseling, behavioral healthcare, or medical care.
